Akron ohio like many akronites mayor dan horrigan has fond memories of attending events at the akron rubber bowl now nearly 80 years after it opened its gates to football fans and music.

The rubber bowl is an abandoned and partially demolished stadium located in akron ohio that was primarily used for american football from its opening in 1940 until 2008 it served as the home field of the akron zips football team of the university of akron prior to the opening of infocision stadium summa field throughout its history it has also hosted concerts professional football. Made obsolete by the newly built infocision stadium summa field in 2009 the rubber bowl now sits empty and rapidly decaying from age and vandalism. The akron zips the football team of akron university was the primary tenant. But no matter who you saw when you saw them rain or shine the memories fans made at the rubber bowl are some they ve held closest.

A place woven so deep into akron s history it was a bittersweet goodbye when demolition began in 2018. Smaller acts and local bands performed throughout the stadium s existence as well. The zips went on to play 324 games in the rubber bowl stadium.
